The Proposal

How He Asked

JUNE POV

It was December 31, 2019. New Year's Eve.

The plan was to meet Sarah at my apartment and go to NYC together to watch the ball drop near Time Square.

The REAL plan was to spend the entire day setting up *OUR* home-to-be for the special proposal.

I was nervous and didn't realize how time-consuming this process would be. But I wanted to do it all by myself to make it that much more meaningful (because Sarah likes that kind of thing)

I finally finished decorating the place with balloons, flowers, lights, and pictures of us - all while accidentally popping some balloons (RIP balloons) and nearly falling while trying to attach the lights to the ceiling. I had everything ready: the music I was going to play when she walked in, the ring that I would propose with as I got down on one knee, and the heartfelt speech I had practiced a million times over again in my head.

At 10pm, Sarah had arrived and was waiting for me in the lobby. She looked as beautiful as ever, looking excited to watch the ball drop. Well, we wouldn't necessarily be watching that ball drop but it would be even better. I hoped she wouldn't be upset LOL. I told her we still had time before leaving for NYC and we decided to wait inside my apartment together. My heart was beating fast as I told her I actually had a surprise for her and I put a blindfold over her eyes.

I think that's when she knew. Because she suddenly became super nervous, just like me!

I took off the blindfold and she took it all in with surprise on her face- the flashing lights, the heart on the floor adorned with pretty flowers, the candles that lit up the room. And then the balloons that spelled out "MARRY ME."

I got down on one knee ready to ask the big question... but I suddenly became speechless. It was simply such a beautiful moment. Sarah was crying tears of happiness and so was I. The emotions we felt were indescribable. All 8 years of our relationship from the beginning to now, being so blessed to have met Sarah in my life, looking at how far we've come, and thinking back to our precious memories and the many more we were going to make in the future. It was everything I wanted and more. We cherished the moment smiling at each other. And rather than the speech I had practiced, I spoke to her from my heart.

And then...

"Will you marry me?"

FUN FACT: I forgot to turn on the music because I was so nervous!

We laughed and slow danced to "Can't Help Falling in Love"

Her Answer

She said YESSS!!!

I was the happiest man in the whole wide world.

We had both waited so long for this and wanted so much to be with each other for the rest of our lives.

I asked if she still wanted to go to NYC but Sarah preferred watching the ball drop at our new home-to-be while snuggling with each other, looking at her ring, and eating pizza. I was totally okay with that!

Our good friend, Jehwan, came over a little while later to take engagement pictures of us. After a change of clothes, we took SO many pictures of our special night.

And the rest of the night until the sun rose that morning, we had fun celebrating and planning for the new year

and our future together!

"It was a million tiny little things that, when you added them all up, they meant we were supposed to be together."
